a happy little design studio

Shmo or Schmo?

I had sincere hopes of making drawing and sketching part of my daily routine.  Ideally, I would be able to dedicate at least an hour from every day to just me, my sketchbook, and whatever tools/mediums I felt like using.   Between school and work projects, it's actually become more of a weekend affair.

So, this weekend's sketchbook project is acrylic and pen.   My second attempt with acrylics after not using them for several years.  My first attempt felt a little clumsy and awkward.  And then I was flipping through a magazine and saw a picture of Trump.  Of course my first thought was, what a Shmo!  But, as I was looking at his face, I began noticing the little highlights and shadows and had the urge to paint.   I am much happier with the stylistic quality of this piece.  Just for the record, Schmo and Shmo are both in the dictionary and mean the same thing.  I went with the shorter spelling for aesthetic reasons.  My husband suggested (after I was nearly finished painting) that I should have went with Chump because it rhymes with Trump.  He is totally right.  Darn.

Fun with Colored Pens

Over the last several years I have been working towards my Bachelors in Graphic Design.  So this factor has been a huge influence on my shift away from traditional mediums and towards digital art.   I love the flexibility digital art offers, but there's also something to be said for the tangibility of working in traditional art mediums.   Afraid I may cause myself to go blind from spending so much time in front of the computer, I bought myself a new sketchbook and plan to devote time to some good old fashioned sketching a few days a week.   It wasn't until I began drawing in my new sketchbook again that I realized how much I had missed this old past time.

This sketch was created with Pigma Brush Pens (which I love) and also a few Bic marker pens.

You Are What You Do With Your Hands

I watched an episode of Art 21 a week or two ago. I can't exactly remember which episode, but one of the artists featured was a sculptor. And she said something that stuck with me - You Are What You Do With Your Hands. I think there is a lot of truth in that simple statement.

Believe in What you Say

I saw this Video today and felt really inspired by it. It's humorous, truthful and wise.

Sketches

The internet went down yesterday afternoon.  After my initial hysteria passed, I decided it would be nice to get away from the computer.  I could have (and probably should have) taken the opportunity to tidy the house.  However, I got out the sketch book out  and cranked up the tunes instead!  The brown brush pen is my favorite these days.
